This is the first time that Othello himself and not Iago calls negative attention to either his race or his age. Set in Venice and Cyprus during the 16th century, Othello, a moor, deals with the manipulative actions of a general of the Venetian army, Iago. As they wait for Desdemona to arrive, Othello says that Brabantio used to invite him to his house to hear his life story, with all its dramatic tales of travel, battle, and valor. Lodovico tells Iago to look at the result of his devious efforts, names Graziano as Othellos heir, and puts Montano in charge of Iagos execution. This speech is important to the book as a whole because it is a testimony to the strength of the love between Othello and Desdemona, which will later play a major role in the plot. Hubris: Hubris, generally described as a hero's excessive pride or self-confidence which leads him to his downfall, is a central theme of the Oresteia. We hear a sigh in the phrase for my pains (ooh) a world of sighs, making the audience feel sympathetic of Othello. Othello's jealousy blinds him to the reality of the situation and he willingly accepts unsubstantial evidence as proof of his wife's infidelity.
